Information on bed Bugs and Bed Bug Treatment Procedures

Controlling Infestations of Bed Bugs. Direct information on bed bug issues.

Bed bugs are demanding pests to control. Since they can hide in so numerous places, treatments should be thorough and elimination is not usually a certainty. In many cases, it will be sensible to enlist the expertise of an expert. Skilled pest management firms know where to search for bed bugs, and have a variety of management tools at their disposal.

Owners and residents provide an crucial role and definately will want to aid the expert. Affording entry for assessment and treatment is essential, and excess clutter will need to be removed. Belongings strewn about rooms afford several locations for bed bugs to hide, and impedes inspection and treatment. Some pest control firms want furniture moved away from walls and mattresses and box springs stood on edge prior to they arrive; other people prefer to inspect 1st and move these items themselves. Since bed bugs can disperse throughout a building, it usually is going to be needed to inspect adjoining rooms and apartments.

Bed Bugs Treatment Procedures. Infested and infestation-prone bed linen and clothes will want to be bagged and laundered (120°F minimum) since these items can’t be treated with insecticides. An additional efficient and efficient choice would be to place clothing, toys, shoes, backpacks, etc., in a clothes dryer set at medium to high heat for 10 to 20 minutes. This will kill all bed bug life stages and could be carried out alone or in conjunction with laundering. Based on textile experts at the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (Laurel, MD), most garments designated as ‘dry-clean only’ (e.g., cotton, wool, silk, linen, rayon, nylon, poly blends) are not harmed provided they are dry prior to being placed in a clothes dryer at moderate (less than 160?F) settings. While dry cleaning procedures also kill bed bugs, there is risk of infesting the establishment when buggy items are de-bagged, tagged and sorted.

Items which can’t be put in a washer or dryer can often be de-infested by wrapping in plastic and placing them outdoors in a hot, sunny location, closed vehicle, etc. for at least a day. If this method is attempted, packing fewer items per bag makes it harder for the bugs to find cooler places to hide. Monitoring with a thermometer is sensible, using a target internal temperature of at least 120°F. Bed bugs also will succumb to cold temperatures below 32°F, but the freezing temperatures should be maintained for a number of days. Consequently, throughout much of the country, heating tends to be a faster, more reliable choice than chilling. Attempts to rid an entire dwelling of bed bugs by raising or lowering the thermostat will probably be unsuccessful, although some companies are having success using supplemental heaters.

General housecleaning actions, such as vacuuming floors and surfaces, seldom reaches the places where bed bugs hide. Targeted vacuuming of infested harborages, however, can help remove some of the bugs prior to treatment with insecticides. Bed bugs and especially the eggs might be difficult to dislodge. Optimum results will likely be achieved by moving and scraping the end of the suction wand along infested areas such as seams and fabric folds of beds and sofas, and the perimeter edge of wall-to-wall carpets. Afterward, dispose of the vacuum contents in a sealed trash bag. Some pest control firms also employ commercial steamers or rapid freezing equipment to treat areas where bed bugs are found or suspected. Used correctly, they kill both bugs and eggs on contact. Neither method, however, affords residual protection against bed bugs which could have been missed.

]]>

At times it could be required to throw out infested items, especially beds and upholstered furniture. Knowledgeable pest control firms are able to advise clients on what can stay and what need to go. When infested items are discarded, bagging or wrapping them prevents dislodgement of bugs en route to the Dumpster®.

While the above mentioned procedures are helpful, insecticides are critical for bed bug elimination. Professionals treat using a variety of low-odor sprays, dusts and aerosols. Baits designed to control ants and cockroaches are ineffective. Application entails treating all areas where the bugs are discovered or tend to crawl or hide. This could take hours of effort and follow-up visits are normally needed.

Some bed bug species are parasites of bats or birds, and could bite men and women if the wild hosts are no longer available. If bat bugs or bird bugs are involved, roosting and nesting sites need to be the primary focus of treatment and the animals excluded from the building.

Do I Need to Throw Out the Bed? Eliminating bed bugs from beds might be challenging. If there are holes or tears in the fabric, the bugs and eggs could be inside, as well as outside. There also are restrictions on how beds might be treated with pesticides. For these reasons, companies sometimes recommend that beds be discarded, especially when heavily infested or in poor condition. An additional alternative would be to encase both the mattress and box spring in a protective cover like those used for allergy relief. Encasements specifically designed to help protect againstbed bugsare available through retail outlets or pest control firms. Once the cover is installed and zipped shut, any bugs which happen to be inside are entombed and eventually will die. Encasements also help protect newly purchased beds, and make it easier to spot and destroy any bugs residing on the outer surface during subsequent examination. Encasements will not, however, keep bed bugs from crawling onto a bed and biting a sleeping person.

Some companies treat seams, tufts, and crevices of bed components with insecticides, but they normally will not spray the entire mattress surface. They also should not spray bed sheets, blankets or clothing, which should be laundered. Vacuuming and steaming further help to eliminate bugs and eggs from beds, but afford no residual protection and may not kill bed bugs hidden inside the box spring or mattress. Fumigation is another way to de-infest beds and hard-to-treat items, but the procedure is not always available. In extreme cases, entire buildings have been fumigated for bed bugs. The service can be quite costly though, and involves covering the building in a tarp and injecting a lethal gas. Some companies also de-infest such items with specialized heating equipment.

Preventing Infestations

As difficult as it can be to eradicate bed bugs, it makes great sense to take precautions to avoid them in the first place. Householders should be vigilant when acquiring used furnishings, especially beds and couches. Curbside items should be avoided, and secondhand articles should be examined closely before being brought into the home, and perhaps laundered or placed in a dryer. Avoiding problems with bed bugs is most challenging in apartments, hotels and other places where there are ongoing opportunities for the bugs to be introduced. Preventative inspection by tenants, housekeeping staff, or pest control firms is the best way to uncover infestations in their initial stages when they are easiest to control.

Mattress and boxspring piled along the street curb
Discarded beds and couches might be infested and should be left alone.

Concerned vacationers may want to get in the habit of looking at their bed for signs of bed bugs, a common practice previously. This would entail examining the bed sheets and upper and lower seams of the mattress and box spring, especially along the head of the bed. Some professionals also suggest removal and examination behind the headboard, a frequent hiding place for the bugs in hotel rooms. Headboards are heavy and cumbersome, however, and untrained persons should not attempt removal themselves. If bed bugsare discovered , travelers can request another room, preferably in another area of the building. Vigilant travelers may also want to elevate suitcases off the floor on a luggage stand, tabletop or other hard surface. Should travelers experience itchy welts suggestive of bed bug bites during their stay, it would be prudent upon returning home (before unpacking) to place all clothing in disposable plastic bags and directly into the washer and/or dryer. Inspecting or vacuuming luggage upon arrival home is less useful since it’s hard to spot bed bugs inside a suitcase. The suitcase itself can either be treated or discarded.

The incidence of bed bugs in the United States is increasing to the point where vigilance by all is a prudent practice. Familiarity can help to avoid infestation, or at least prompt earlier intervention by a professional.

Travelers’ Guide to Avoiding Bed Bugs

A tiny insect the size of an apple seed is turning vacations into nightmares and giving U.S. travelers the willies every time they enter a hotel room. Cimex lectularius, the common bed bug, returned to American shores in the suitcases of international travelers. Over the past decade this blood-feeding parasite has been hitchhiking its way across the U.S. hidden in the luggage of millions of unsuspecting travelers. Spreading from New York City, the nation’s busiest international gateway, bed bugs have crept relentlessly across American to infest all 50 states.

Over the past few years, bed bug infestations in the U.S. have increased by 500%. Researchers cite travel as the No. 1 cause of bed bug spread and infestation. The New York City Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications recently reported a 50% increase in bed bug complaints at hotels between 2009 and 2010. In heavily infested cities in Ohio, more than 70% of hotels have battled bed bug infestations. According to the NPMA 2010 Comprehensive Global Bed Bug Study conducted in conjunction with the University of Kentucky, 67% of 1,000 pest management firms surveyed reported treating bed bug infestations at a hotel or motel in the past 12 months.

Bed bugs feed on human blood and are not attracted by dirt or filth. “Bed bugs are brought into hotels by guests; it is not a hotel sanitation issue,” the American Hotel and Lodging Association said in a statement. These insects are as likely to be found in a 5-star luxury hotel as a modest 1-star motel. And there’s the rub for travelers. A hotel room that is bed bug free one night can be infested the next. Bed bugs do not live on humans. They crawl into beds to feed, then scurry away, hiding in crevices near beds until the next meal. Suitcases and laptop computers placed on the bed make perfect hiding places for these pests. When travelers check out of an infested hotel room, a few bed bugs are likely to stow away in their luggage, creeping out at the next hotel to infest another room or, even worse, following travelers home.

The growing prevalence of bed bugs in the U.S. is no reason to swear off travel and stay home; but travelers who don’t want to bring bed bugs home with them will want to be proactive before, during and after a trip. Use this handy guide to protect yourself from bed bugs when you travel.

Before you book a hotel room
• Check Bed Bug Registry and Trip Advisor online to see if bed bugs have been reported at your preferred hotel. If you find multiple reports, choose a different hotel. A new iPhone app, Bed Bug Alert by Apps Genius in New York City, also reports bed bug outbreaks in 10 major U.S. cities.

• Call the hotel and ask how often rooms are inspected for bed bugs and whether bed bug-proof encasements are installed on the beds.

Before you leave home
• Install bed bug-proof encasements and box springs on all the beds in your home.

• Educate yourself about bed bugs so you know what to watch for. Bed bugs are small, flat, wingless insects that feed on human blood. From cream-colored nymphs the size of a poppy-seed, bed bugs progress through 5 larval stages to become reddish brown, 1/4-inch long adults. When they feed, bed bugs leave bloody smears and black fecal dots that look like coffee grounds on bed sheets and mattresses. About 50% of people react to their bites and will exhibit itchy, red, mosquito-like bites, usually in rows or groups of three. Whitish skins shed during molting are another indication of bed bug infestation.

• Download and print the free New York State Integrated Pest Management Bed Bug Travelers’ Card prepared by Cornell University. This wallet-size card contains bed bug photos and information, making it a handy guide for travelers (and college students).

When you pack
• Pack a small flashlight, disposable gloves and a selection of garbage bags where they will be easily-accessible.

• Choose hard-sided luggage. Bed bugs like to hide in the seams of soft-sided luggage and prefer to lay their eggs on rough surfaces.

• You may want to spray your luggage inside and out with a permethrin-based luggage spray labeled for your particular use. Permethrin provides 2 to 4 weeks of protection against bed bugs. Do not use a house or garden sprays as they have no effect on bed bugs.

• Only pack clothing that can safely be washed in hot water and dried in a hot dryer for a minimum of 30 minutes or dry cleaned.

• Before placing into suitcase, pack clothing and other items into bed bug-proof luggage liners or sealable plastic bags like Ziplock bags. Do not use bags with slider openings as bed bugs can squeeze past sliders to infest bag contents.

When you arrive at your hotel
• Ask to inspect the room before you hand over your credit card.

• Inspect the room following the instructions below.

• If you find evidence of bed bugs, ask for another room in a different part of the hotel or move to another hotel. Do not accept a room that is next to, above or below the infested room as these are the first places bed bugs will migrate as an infestation spreads.

• Repeat the inspection procedure in your new room.

How to inspect a hotel room
• Put your luggage and possessions in the bathtub where bed bugs are least likely to harbor. Bed bugs cannot climb smooth surfaces and prefer to stay near their food source (sleeping humans).

• Put on your disposable gloves and get out your flashlight.

• Start at the bed as 80% of bed bug infestations are found in mattresses and box springs.

• Pull the headboard away from the wall. Bed bugs often harbor in this inaccessible space. If the headboard is attached to the wall with brackets, lift it up and away from the wall (ask a hotel employee for help). Use your flashlight to look for crawling bugs or fecal stains.

• Remove linens and pillows from the beds, inspecting them for bloody smears and black fecal stains.

• Inspect the mattress and box springs, especially seams and piping, for live bugs, shed skins, blood smears and fecal stains.

• Using your flashlight, check the rest of the room, including behind hanging pictures, inside and under drawers (pull drawers all the way out), upholstered furniture, around air vents and along carpet edges.

During your hotel stay
• Keep luggage on luggage racks positioned at least 4 inches from the wall or on hard furniture like a table. If you must place luggage on the floor, place it in resealable plastic bags first. Never lay suitcases or clothing on beds or upholstered furniture.

• Keep suitcases closed when not in use to keep bed bugs from crawling inside.

• Do not unpack your clothing into drawers; keep it inside your suitcase.

• Hang clothing, purses and backpacks in the bathroom or from hangers in the closet.

• Seal purchases in plastic bags.

• Place dirty clothes in disposable bed bug-proof laundry bag or sealed plastic bags.

• Keep shoes in sealed plastic bags.

• Inspect sheets and mattresses for bed bug signs every morning. Request a different room if you wake up with itchy bites or see signs of bed bugs. Some upscale hotels will launder clothing and steam-clean your luggage if bed bugs are found in your room.

When you check out
• Check each item as you pack it, as well as luggage surfaces.

• Seal suitcases in large plastic bags before putting them in your car.

When you return home
• Do not carry suitcases into your house. Unpack on a cleared floor in the garage or laundry room. If you must carry your suitcases through the house to reach the laundry room, seal them in large plastic bags to prevent bed bugs or eggs from falling off and infesting your home. Never unpack on a carpet. Dispose of all bags in an outside trash container.

• Unpack suitcase contents directly into new plastic trash bags, carefully inspecting each item as you unpack it. Dispose of all bags in an outside trash container.

• Sort laundry into trash bags, one load per bag. Even unworn clothing should be laundered. Dispose of all bags in an outside trash container.

• Carry clothes directly to washer and launder in hottest water possible (minimum 120 degrees) and dry at hottest setting for 60 minutes. Remove used bags from home immediately.

• Clothing that cannot be washed should be taken to the dry cleaners in a sealed plastic bag. Alert the cleaners that bed bugs may be present. Make certain that they dispose of all bags.

• Items that cannot be laundered should be frozen in sealed plastic bags for 2 weeks.

• Carefully inspect suitcases with a flashlight, brushing surfaces with a stiff-bristled brush to dislodge any eggs. Vacuum thoroughly and immediately dispose of vacuum bag. Store suitcases in sealed plastic bags in the garage. Never store suitcases in or near bedrooms.

• Vacuum entire house and promptly dispose of sweeper bag in the outside trash.

• For the next few weeks, inspect beds daily for bed bug signs.

What to do if bed bugs follow you home
If, despite all your precautions, you discover evidence of bed bugs in your home after traveling, immediately contact a licensed pest control company with an expertise in bed bug extermination. Bed bugs are extremely prolific insects. During its 6- to 12-month lifespan, a female bed bug can lay 500 eggs with offspring capable of reproducing within a month. Prompt treatment by a pest management professional in the early stages of infestation can save you money and prevent bed bugs from spreading through your home.

Bed Bug Life Cycle

Like all beings, the life cycle of the bed bug is really a extremely normal factor. They are born, raise and reside. And yet, as those that are hoping to get rid of a bed beg will explain to you, it is really important for you to have an realizing of exactly what this life cycle is so that you can greater control your infestation trouble. Here you can get data about what is bed bug

It’s less likely that you will really study when your first infestation occurred . This is unless you know exactly where they came from . But, if you assume the time frame from which the first infestation arrived, you can get a greater idea of precisely how potentially large your infestation really is.

Size Matters?

If it comes to knowing the size of the infestation that you’ve got, you’ll wish to try to receive an estimate. This can aid you to find a good handle on exactly what you will do about it. Whilst It may annoyed you to understand how huge your infestation truly is, learning can be the first action to getting rid of them .

Why The Lifecycle Matters

We are going to touch on the fundamentals of the life cycle of the bed bug or what is bed bug . We do that so you have a greater knowing of where they’re in your residence. By taking the time to understand where the bed bugs are in their cycle , you can supply the correct solution to get rid of them .

The Life Cycle Of The Bed Bug: Separated

The female bed bug is the main center from the beginning. She will lay up to 12 eggs a day! While it may only be one egg, it may be as numerous as a dozen .

She will location these eggs in a particular area and typically it will have the same characteristics. It is normally a rough type of surface. Or, she may place them into a little crack or groove that she finds.

She can place them on any rough surface because of the covering that is on them. It’s sticky and will fairly much stick to anything.

It can get from 6 days to 17 days for the eggs to hatch.

The infant bed bugs are named nymphs. Their 1st order of sector is to feed . Actually, they are able to feed from a host right after being hatched.

They want to get their first meal quickly as this blood meal is necessary for their progress. They will molt after their first blood meal.

They will go through a overall of five cycles of molting before they will attain their adult size.

In most conditions, from begin to end, the egg will go from being a little egg to being a full matured mature in as little as twenty one days.

Weather Matters

One thing to take note of when looking at the life cycle of a bed bug is the temperature in the area. In order for the egg to hatch, the nymph to molt and for the bed bug to mature, the proper weather must be met. This temperature requires to be between sixty five degrees and 86 degrees.

If the warmth is not met, the maturity of the bed bug is generally delayed. If the warmth is at eighty six degrees, the bed bug will mature in about 21 days. If the temperature is that of similar to sixty five degrees, it can have as long as 120 da ys for the maturity of a bed bug to really happen.

Food When the egg hatches, an important aim of the nymph will be to find food . It wants a blood meal in order to mature and to get its first molting period. When it hatches until it grows to adulthood, it needs to molt at the least 5 times. Yet, it can’t do this without the suitable amount of food.

Again, this stage of nymph will likely be elongated if there is not sufficient food to supply the needed growth and molting times for the bed bug . The time that it gets for the nymph to grow to maturity has a direct relation to the amount of food that it has.

The Length Of Time They Live

Sadly for the human population, the bed bug is probably to make it through its nymph duration and into adulthood.

One cause for this is as easy as the fact they can stay a few months without eating any food in any way. While they like to feed every five to ten days, they can survive a few months without any food whatsoever. .

After they get to their adult years, the female bed bug will start to reproduce.

After they get to their adult lifetime, the bed bug probably will live between a year to a year and a half. This is dependant upon how much food they receive.

Bed Bug Recognition

Bed Bugs are heat sensitive, wingless blood-feasting bugs that are found everywhere, including the United States. Initially they start life like a small but visible egg, about the dimension of a poppy seed. From there they feed on blood and become juvenile or “nymph” stage bugs. As they develop into adults, brown or red (fed) bed bugs (Here you can get data about what is bed bug) get about the dimensions of an apple seed. Bed bugs can live up to 20 months and might go without a blood meal for 1 ½ years. The female bed bug can lay over 500 eggs in her life cycle, which hatch in about 10 days, given the best temperatures.

It is believed that bed bugs don’t transmit disease. However, they can cause an allergic skin response and bacterial infection from scratching.

If found on time, bed bugs can be effectively managed.

Bites are normally the first warning sign of a bed bug problem, but not all bug bites are bedbugs. Here you can get data about what is bed bug. Since 1998, Amherst School has had only one bed bug incident, which was confined to a single room. That isolated incident occurred, like most bed bug problems, because they were shifted to one site from another in personal belongings such as back packs, bedding, clothing and suitcases.

Bed Bug Bites

Bed bug bites, unlike bites which you might get from a gnat, mosquito, no-see-um or similar pest generally present with a number of attacks, normally in a directly row on the arms, legs, neck or torso. Bed bugs tend to gather together in hidden, undisturbed places where a person sits or sleeps.

* Bed bugs are typically found on the bed, along the seams and sides of the bed mattress and box springs, on the headboard, and the bed frame.

* When assessing a bed or furniture for the possibility of bed bugs, we find for clusters of live bugs, shedding skins, dark colored fecal spots and the eggs. We look for blood spotting on the bed linens, where the bed bugs bite the host * Bed bugs are also known to cover in cracks, such as in baseboards along the floor at the wall.

* Bed bugs are as well known to conceal in cracks, for example in baseboards along the floor on the wall.
